چکیده

The present paper is an overview of state the art in plant conservation Mediterranean-type Ecosystems (MTEs), highlighting current studies and neglected topics. A review literature dealing with this issue a general analysis results was performed, delving into relevant biology main topics considered were: 1) reproductive genetic conservation, 2) threat factors effects global change, 3) evaluation status protected areas selection. This study illustrates differences number documents published northern countries Mediterranean Basin concerning southern eastern compared other MTEs. It also highlights paramount importance public organizations as funding entities. Additionally, it points to decrease traditional subject categories related increased multidisciplinary research novel methodologies (e.g., phylogenomics, SDM). To overcome existing biases among different MTE regions, integrating actions at transnational level would be necessary, standard policies strategies. Moreover, should supported more important participation from private entities, clear focus on specific proposals. In contrast, certain weaknesses were detected, some limited information available about threatened species scarce use data management plans. Consequently, authors consider that future efforts addressed improve knowledge MTEs’ flora implement manual good practices, which make put forward direct proposals for conservation.

Flowering phenology of invasive alien plant species compared with native species in three Mediterranean-type ecosystems.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Flowering phenology is a potentially important component of success of alien species, since elevated fecundity may enhance invasiveness. The flowering patterns of invasive alien plant species and related natives were studied in three regions with Mediterranean-type climate: California, Spain and South Africa's Cape region. METHODS A total of 227 invasive-native pairs were ...

Contrasting Biogeographic and Diversification Patterns in Two Mediterranean-Type Ecosystems

The five Mediterranean regions of the world comprise almost 50,000 plant species (ca 20% of the known vascular plants) despite accounting for less than 5% of the world's land surface. The ecology and evolutionary history of two of these regions, the Cape Floristic Region and the Mediterranean Basin, have been extensively investigated, but there have been few studies aimed at understanding the h...

The Structure of Mediterranean Rocky Reef Ecosystems across Environmental and Human Gradients, and Conservation Implications

Historical exploitation of the Mediterranean Sea and the absence of rigorous baselines makes it difficult to evaluate the current health of the marine ecosystems and the efficacy of conservation actions at the ecosystem level. Here we establish the first current baseline and gradient of ecosystem structure of nearshore rocky reefs at the Mediterranean scale. We conducted underwater surveys in 1...
